Hops by the kilo

One of the things that I have found is that I have had to use different suppliers for the various ingredients and equipment that I need. And it isn’t because some items are out of stock with some suppliers – they simply don’t stock it (either at all or in the right quantities). This has forced me to use a number of different suppliers.

Hops are a good example.

There are a number of suppliers around that can provide a wide variety of hops – but it is often only in 100g packets. When the total hop content of some 23L brews can be in the region of 200-300g, you can get through a lot of hops. Particularly if you are buying it 100g at a time! And it can start to get expensive quickly if you brew regularly.

The table below shows the price of hop pellets for some popular varieties (well popular with me anyway!). All are from the 2019 crop. The pricing column shows the difference between buying a kilo (1,000g outright) and buying 10 x 100g packets. There is a remarkable difference.

HopsPer kiloPer kilo (100g packets)
Cascade£20.00£40.00
Chinook£25.75£47.50
Citra£34.00£75.00
Columbus£17.50£46.00
Magnum£12.00£39.50
Mosaic£34.00£80.00

GetErBrewed in Ireland are the only supplier that I have found that supplies hops by the kilo for home brewers. Make sure you look under “Wholesale hops” on their website – confusing, I know. There are plenty of suppliers that can provided 100g packets, but only one that seems to sell hops packaged in 1KG packets.
